If you are applying for a UK Spouse or Civil Partner Visa, you must show that you can speak and understand English. This requirement helps ensure that applicants are able to integrate into life in the UK and communicate effectively.

In this guide, we explain who must meet the English language requirement, the different ways to satisfy it, which tests are accepted, and the limited exemptions that may apply.

Who Needs to Meet the Requirement

The English language requirement applies to all applicants aged 18 or over who are applying for a UK Spouse or Civil Partner Visa. This includes both:

The requirement must be met at the point of application. You must submit evidence that you meet the language standard when you apply. If this evidence is missing, incorrect, or based on an unapproved test, your application may be refused without the chance to provide further information.

This rule applies whether it is your first spouse visa application or a renewal after 2.5 years. The required level of English increases at different stages, which we cover in later sections of this guide.

Accepted Ways to Meet the Requirement

To meet the English language requirement for a UK Spouse or Civil Partner Visa, you must demonstrate your ability to speak and understand English in one of three approved ways. These are outlined by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and must be satisfied before your application is submitted.

Each option has specific conditions, which we explain below.

Passing an Approved English Language Test

One of the most common ways to meet the requirement is by passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) at the correct level.

Required CEFR Levels

The test must assess speaking and listening skills only. Reading and writing are not required for this visa route.

Approved Test Providers

You must take your test at a UKVI-approved test centre, using one of the following authorised providers:

Ensure you book the correct test for your visa type. For a spouse visa, this will usually be a Life Skills or equivalent two-skills test at the A1 or A2 level, depending on whether it’s your first application or a renewal.

Important Notes

Holding a Degree Taught or Researched in English

If you hold a university-level qualification taught or researched in English, you may be able to meet the requirement without taking a test.

UK Degree

If a UK university awarded your degree, you simply need to provide the original degree certificate as evidence. No further verification is required.

Non-UK Degree

If your degree was obtained outside the UK, two conditions must be met:

To confirm this, you must apply to Ecctis (formerly known as UK NARIC) for a Statement of Comparability and an English Language Proficiency statement. These confirm both the academic level and the language of instruction.

Allow sufficient time for the ECTIS assessment, as processing can take several weeks and must be completed before submitting your visa application.

National of a Majority English-speaking country

If you are a citizen of one of the following countries, you are automatically considered to meet the English language requirement and do not need to take a test or provide a qualification:

  • Antigua and Barbuda

  • Australia

  • The Bahamas

  • Barbados

  • Belize

  • Canada

  • Dominica

  • Grenada

  • Guyana

  • Jamaica

  • Malta

  • New Zealand

  • St Kitts and Nevis

  • St Lucia

  • St Vincent and the Grenadines

  • Trinidad and Tobago

  • United States of America

You will still need to submit a valid passport as proof of your nationality. No further documentation is needed if you are from one of these countries.

Each of these options is valid, but the one that applies to you will depend on your background, qualifications, and nationality. Choosing the right method and preparing the correct evidence in advance will help ensure your application is processed smoothly.

English Language Tests – What to Expect

If you plan to meet the English language requirement by taking a Secure English Language Test (SELT), it is important to understand what the test involves, how it is structured, and how to make sure your results are valid for visa purposes.

Skills Assessed

For a UK Spouse or Civil Partner Visa, the test must assess only speaking and listening skills. Reading and writing are not required.

You must choose a test specifically designed for the visa route you are applying under. For example, IELTS Life Skills and Trinity College London GESE tests are structured for this purpose.

Test Format and Duration

The format and length of the test vary slightly between providers, but the typical structure is:

  • IELTS Life Skills (A1 or A2):

    • Speaking and listening combined

    • One-to-one interview with an examiner, often with a second candidate

    • Duration: 16–18 minutes

  • Trinity GESE (Grades 2 or 3, corresponding to A1 and A2):

    • One-to-one conversation with an examiner

    • Duration: 7–10 minutes

Other providers, such as LanguageCert, Pearson, or PS, offer similar tests that meet UKVI standards. You must select the UKVI version of the test at the correct CEFR level (A1, A2, or B1).

Booking the Test

You must:

When booking, make sure the test is marked as a UKVI-approved test, or your results will not be accepted.

What to Bring on Test Day

Arrive early, as late arrivals may not be allowed to take the test. If you fail to meet the ID requirements, you may be turned away and will need to rebook

Test Results and Validity

Keep a copy of your results in a safe place, as you may need to refer to them for future applications.

Retaking the Test

If you do not pass on your first attempt, you can retake the test. There is no limit on the number of attempts, but you must allow time for booking, taking the test, and receiving your result before your visa deadline.

Taking the correct test, at the correct level, from an approved provider is essential. Even a small mistake, such as booking a non-UKVI test, can lead to a refusal. Always double-check before making any arrangements.

When a Higher Level is Required

The English language requirement for a UK Spouse or Civil Partner Visa is not a one-time obligation. As you move through the visa pathway, you will need to demonstrate a higher level of English at later stages.

Understanding when the level increases, and by how much, is essential for staying on track and avoiding delays in future applications.

Initial Application – A1 Level

When applying for your first spouse visa (entry clearance or further leave to remain), you must meet the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) A1 level in speaking and listening.

This is a basic level of English and demonstrates that you can:

Extension Application – A2 Level

After 2.5 years in the UK on a spouse visa, you may apply for an extension (further leave to remain under FLR(M)). For this stage, you must meet CEFR A2 in speaking and listening.

This higher level of English shows that you can:

If you met the A1 level for your initial application, you will need to take a new test at the A2 level before applying for your extension, unless you qualify through another route, such as a degree or exemption.

This requirement only applies to those applying from within the UK. If you are applying for a new entry clearance after time spent outside the UK, A1 may still apply.

Indefinite Leave to Remain – B1 Level

When you have completed five years on the spouse visa route and apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), you must meet CEFR B1 in speaking and listening.

At this level, you are expected to:

In addition to the B1 English test, you must also pass the Life in the UK Test to qualify for settlement.

Many applicants take the IELTS Life Skills B1 test or Trinity GESE Grade 5, both of which are accepted by UKVI for this stage.

Summary of Progression

Visa Stage Minimum CEFR Level Notes
Initial Spouse Visa
A1
Speaking and listening only
Extension (FLR(M))
A2
Required after 2.5 years in the UK
Indefinite Leave to Remain
B1
Plus Life in the UK Test

Meeting the correct English level at each stage is not optional. If you fail to provide the right evidence when applying for an extension or ILR, your application may be refused or delayed.

Planning ahead, especially if a new test will be needed, can help you stay on track and avoid unnecessary stress.

Exemptions

In some limited circumstances, applicants may be exempt from the English language requirement. These exemptions are strictly defined by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and must be supported by the appropriate evidence.

If you believe you qualify for an exemption, it is essential to include the correct documentation with your application. Otherwise, it will be treated as incomplete and may be refused.

Age-Based Exemption

You are exempt from the English language requirement if you are aged 65 or over at the time of your application. No language test or qualification is needed in this case.

You will still need to provide proof of your age, typically through your passport or national identity document.

Physical or Mental Disability

You may be exempt if you have a long-term physical or mental condition that prevents you from meeting the requirement. This must be supported by clear medical evidence.

To qualify:

This exemption is assessed on a case-by-case basis and must show that the barrier is significant and ongoing

Exceptional Circumstances (Test Not Reasonably Available)

In very rare cases, UKVI may grant an exemption where no approved test is reasonably available in your location. This may apply in situations such as:

To apply under this exemption, you must provide evidence of your location and explain why it is not possible to take a test. UKVI will only consider this in exceptional cases and expects applicants to make reasonable efforts to comply.

Important Notes

Exemptions are only granted in clearly defined situations. If you are not certain whether you qualify, it is safer to take an approved test or seek advice before submitting your application.

Tips for Applicants

Meeting the English language requirement is a key part of your UK Spouse or Civil Partner Visa application. The process is straightforward if you prepare in advance and avoid common mistakes. These tips can help you stay on track and avoid delays.

Book Your Test Early

Approved test centres can become fully booked, especially around peak times. Try to schedule your test as early as possible, ideally several weeks before your application deadline.

Booking in advance also gives you time to:

Choose the Correct Test and Provider

Make sure the test you book:

Booking the wrong test or attending a non-approved centre is a common reason for refusal.

Use the Correct Version of the Test

Most providers offer different versions of the same test for academic use, general use, and UK visas. For a spouse visa, you must book the UKVI-approved version of the test, even if other versions appear similar.

Keep All Certificates and Reference Numbers

After passing your test, you will receive:

You must include this reference number in your application. Keep a copy of your result and certificate in a safe place, especially if you plan to reuse it later (e.g. when applying for an extension or ILR).

Allow Time for Ecctis (If Using a Degree)

If you are relying on a non-UK degree taught in English, you must apply to Ecctis for a Statement of Comparability and an English Language Proficiency statement.

This process can take 10–20 working days or more, so start early. You will need:

Double-Check Everything Before You Submit

Before submitting your application:

Taking a few minutes to review your paperwork can prevent costly delays or refusals.

Final Note

Meeting the English language requirement is a vital part of the UK Spouse or Civil Partner Visa process. Whether you’re taking a test, relying on a degree, or qualifying through nationality, the key is to understand the rules early and prepare your evidence in good time.

Use an approved test provider, check the required CEFR level for your stage in the process, and ensure all documents are submitted correctly. If you’re relying on a degree or claiming an exemption, make sure the necessary verification or medical evidence is included.

Taking the time to get this part of your application right can help you avoid unnecessary delays and strengthen your overall case.
